It's Fall Anime Season time, and 86 Season 2 is finally coming to our screens after a season-long break. The sci-fi show had a bit of a slow start when it first aired but in Spring the finale had many of us crying our eyes out.
In some ways, the finale of the first cour felt like the end of everything, with some fans who haven't read the light novel or manga series believing Season 2 will be an alternative universe or flashback, as it's hard to see how the main characters could have made it out ok. Without spoiling anything, let's say they probably still have a long to go.

86: Eighty-Six Anime Season 2 Episode 1: What Happened Previously and What to Expect?
86 tells the tragic story of Lena and Shin. She's an elite handler for the seemingly utopian Republic of San Magnolia, a country perpetually at war with the Giadian Empire. The public is made to believe that the was in question is bloodless, fought entirely by machines, but Handlers like Lena know better. The 85 districts of the Republic live in safety and relative luxury, but the mechas fighting the war are not, in fact, unmanned; for there's an unknown, 86th area.
The youths of area 86 are forced to fight a hopeless war for a Republic that will do nothing for them and is at peace with the fact that most of them won't survive the year. When Lena becomes the Handler of the most long-lived 86 unit, she is determined to be different and do better. Due to a combination of past experiences and a gentle character, she truly cares for those in area 86.
While chatting with her unit through advanced technology, she gets to know their leader, Shin, known as the Undertaker because he's tasked with holding the IDs of his many, many dead companions. As Lena becomes more and more personally invested in their struggle, refusing to believe they're doomed, things take a turn for the tragic.
While this sounds like a well-known premise with a dose of overt fantastical racism, 86 proves more nuanced than you might suspect: Lena, who could have easily been illustrated as a white savior type, is frequently forced to face her own misconceptions, and even understand that her interest in 86 is selfish and her help undesirable - at least at the beginning.
By the end of the first cour, Lena has, at least partially, confronted her privileges and previously prejudiced views, but it might be too late for her to actually do something, as she visits the headquarters of Shin and his friends to find them already gone. His survival seems spoiled by the format since 86 is both his and Lena's story, but the show will have to work very hard to persuade us that something other than plot armor saved him as things weren't good for him in the finale.
If Shin has survived, an in-person meeting between him and Lena is a must in Season 2, and we can't wait to see it!
