Despite Hollywood's most advanced technology, experimenting with equipment and storytelling has never stopped. Now, a new report says that Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later starring Cillian Murphy was only filmed through the lens of an iPhone 15 model.

Danny Boyle's Long-Awaited 28 Years Later was Shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max

The 2002 genre-bending 28 Days Later and 2007's 28 Weeks Later had been initially rumored to kickstart a new trilogy.

Hence, 28 Years Later will have Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy reprise his titular role as Jim, marking the beginning of a highly anticipated trilogy.

Considering the milestone of on-screen zombie portrayals that went after the franchise, the first of the threequel is going to do things a bit differently.

According to a report from WIRED, 28 Years Later, which is due to premiere on the big screens in June 2025, was filmed over the summer using "adapted iPhone 15s." This makes it the "biggest movie to date filmed with smartphones" on a budget of $75 million.

The utilization of Apple smartphones in the principal camera system was "subsequently confirmed to WIRED" by insiders. The upcoming horror flick was said to have used the iPhone 15 Pro Max model during filming.

While this won't mark 28 Years Later as the first Hollywood feature to have its entire flick filmed on an iPhone, it does lead curious fans to think about why this particular choice would be crucial to the trilogy.

"A whole idea for a trilogy just sort of cameā€”bing!ā€”into my head," film writer Alex Garland previously explained to The Guardian in March 2024.

Garland teased that the script he handed to filmmaker Danny Boyle for 28 Years Later is a 'rip-off' from the 1969 drama flick, Kes, seeing as the movie shares similarities with it in terms of the "landscape, the humans, and its nature."

28 Years Later has yet to unveil complete details but the first names starring in it include Killing Eve's Jodie Comer, Kraven the Hunter's Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and The Menu's Ralph Fiennes.
