After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise is set to take a break with the next movie coming out in 2022. The film was supposed to be directed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, but with them out, it looks like Lucasfilm has found someone else to take their place.
As per the Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that they already have someone in line for the 2022 Star Wars film, but we won't get an official announcement until January. What's curious is, the incoming 2022 film won't be coming from The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson as well.
We don't know who Kennedy has in store for the next Star Wars film, nor do we know what it's about, but there's going to be a lot of pressure for the movie to deliver. With the Skywalker Saga set to end with The Rise of Skywalker, it's said that this new film is going to steer away from the main films that we all know and love. I'm kind of excited in a way, but also worried about what could come. D&D were said to be planning a film that focused on the origins of the Jedi. Whose to say this next director won't be making a film about that as well?
Personally, I would love something that had less Jedi and more starships. I loved Solo: A Star Wars Story because it focused on the underground world of Star Wars. Though The Mandalorian is fun, I would love to get a movie on the big screen.
For now, we wait for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters Dec. 20.
