Pokemon’s Detective Pikachu Gets an Honest Trailer

Avengers: Endgame may have dominated the box office back in May, but Detective Pikachu still managed to be a success when it hit theaters. The movie was admittedly okay, and now Screen Junkies has released their Honest Trailer for the film:

Get ready, Poke-fans. After 21 animated movies, 22 seasons of TV, and countless video games, Pokemon is finally getting a live-action film based on the weird spinoff that no one bought outside Japan; but a mystery game for 6-year-olds was probably the right choice to adapt, since every other Poke-thing is a dogfighting simulator, pay to win card game, or a playable corpse finder.

While I thought the movie was alright, the film does have a point in which most of the action setpieces are just the humans running away from Pokemon. For a franchise that was built on animal fighting, we don’t really get that much of it after all.

The movie also kind of closes the door on Ryan Reynolds coming back as Detective Pikachu. Now that he’s back in his own body, it would be weird for him to suddenly change bodies with his Pokemon again. Then again, this movie is all about a villain who wants to merge people with Pokemon, so I don’t think the sequel has to stretch that hard to make a believable reason for Ryan Reynolds’ character becoming a Pokemon again.

We don’t know when we’re going to get another live-action Pokemon movie, but hopefully we get an update before the year ends.
