Sony Pictures Chairman Says Studio Could Be Up For Sale If It Fails To Grow

It looks like Sony might be headed down the same path as 21st Century Fox.

Sony Pictures Entertainment just recently attended the NATPE conference, and according to Variety, the studio's chairman, Tony Vinciquerra, recently admitted that Sony's entertainment operation has reached a point where it's either they grow, or they sell.

During the conference, Vinciquerra said that he expects to see major studios' ranks shrank from six to just three or four in the next few years, pointing at the upcoming finalization of Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox's assets.

"If we don't grow, we will be somebody's purchase. I didn't take the job to do it for a year and sell the company," Sony's chief told conference moderator Soledad O'Brien.

Vinciquerra became Sony's new chairman last year, and he's trying his best to keep up with competition so that Sony stays in business.

"[Coming in, there was pressure to] create a sense of urgency and making sure people are aware the business is changing rapidly," said Vinciquerra. "If we're not on our toes, we're not going to be in business very long."

The studio head knows very well that company giants like Facebook, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, and Google could very well kick them out of business describing Sony as a "tiny little minnow fighting against all these gigantic companies."

The studio's definitely been trying its best to keep its competitive edge. Fans are looking forward to Tom Hardy's Venom this October, and Sony seems to be hoping that it successfully launches a new franchise for the studio.

Venom comes seeping its way into cinemas on October 5, 2018.
