JJ Abrams Reportedly Aiming To Turn Episode IX Into The Longest Star Wars Film

There might not be that much information about Star Wars: Episode IX yet, but with the film currently in production, leaks have started making their way online. With photos and videos showing so many different locations, speculation now has it that the third and final film in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy may very well be the longest entry in the Star Wars franchise.

With seven new characters announced and more being added, Express reports that rumor has started spreading saying that "JJ and the crew aim to make Episode IX the longest Star Wars to date, surpassing The Last Jedi."

The Force Awakens' sequel clocked in at 152 minutes, becoming the longest entry in the Star Wars saga. The film managed to beat Attack of the Clones, surpassing the film by 10 minutes.

If Episode IX were to try and beat that score, then the film would come close to around three hours of runtime, or possibly even more. After all, the film has a lot to fit in. Not only does Episode IX have to resolve Leia (the late Carrie Fisher)'s plotline, but it also has to bring in Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) as well. Photos and videos taken from the set of the sequel trilogy installment have shown off quite a number of new locations to boot.

Of course, J.J. Abrams could try his best to condense everything into a two-hour-something film. But who knows really. Let's just wait and see.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits cinemas December 20, 2019.
