Ian McDiarmid Says Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’s Palpatine Laugh Came From Archives

Lucasfilm dropped the very first teaser for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker during the 2019 Star Wars Celebration Chicago last weekend, and the trailer brought a whole lot of exciting reveals, including the potential return of Emperor Palpatine.

Fans were shocked when they heard the very familiar cackle of a certain Darth Sidious during the last few seconds of the teaser for The Rise of Skywalker, and many wondered whether it meant that Ian McDiarmid actually did any work in the film.

However, speaking with fans in a panel at Star Wars Celebration, the Palpatine actor admits that the laugh in the trailer actually came from stock footage.

"Like everybody else, I had no idea what the title was," McDiarmid revealed in a discussion with The Star Wars Show. "They did let me into a secret that the Emperor might be laughing, but I have to tell you that that particular laugh was not specially recorded, they found it somewhere, probably from one of the movies or the digital vault or maybe George's iPhone, I don't know."

These comments throw a shade of doubt whether or not McDiarmid might actually make an appearance in the movie. The most popular theory going on right now is that Palpatine won't physically be in The Rise of Skywalker but instead influence Kylo Ren one way or another. One theory states that Palpatine will guide the estranged son of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) to another set of plans for another Death Star.
