The Little Mermaid Live-Action Musical May Happen for TV

The long-awaited Disney series of live-action projects is taking another step forward. ABC has just announced its plans for a special live musical for The Little Mermaid.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the difference between previous live-action TV adaptations of Disney movies and The Little Mermaid project is the combination of both live-action performances with animation--all rolled into a grand musical special.

Titled The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live, the project will be hybrid of live performances with animation using new technology. The songs will be from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's choices from the 1989 movie, Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl.

Done + Dusted will partner with Hamish Hamilton, Ian Stewart, David Jammy, Katy Mullan, and Richard Kraft to produce the show. Clearly, the approach is very experimental, especially with the integration of animation into the mix.

There are no details yet on the other aspects of the project, but if this proves to be a hit, we can expect that ABC may follow it up with other Disney classics, to create a series under The Wonderful World of Disney arc.

The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live is set to premiere on ABC on Oct. 3 as a two-hour special.
