Star Wars: Mark Hamill Thinks The Prequels Were More Original Than The Force Awakens

Though the Star Wars prequels are something widely reviled by the fandom, there's no denying that George Lucas was trying his best to bring more new things with the trilogy as compared to J.J. Abrams' Force Awakens. A lot of people argue that TFA was simply a rehash of A New Hope, and even Mark Hamill agrees.

Talking to Metro, Hamill explained:

"What I thought was great about the prequels was the different technology that I had never seen before. All that CGI. And the fact that [George Lucas] wasn't trying to do the same experience all over again. I thought The Force Awakens did that more than the early ones, because it had that the girl from a different planet, the death star, the Cantina sequence… [Director J. J. Abrams] was trying to figure out what was it about the original movies that everybody loved. And that's a different thought process than what George would have done. Because he would go, ‘I had a beginning, middle, and an end'."

When The Force Awakens came out, a common critique to the movie was that Abrams was playing it safe, bringing us to places that looked familiar while introducing us to new characters. The movie was still enjoyable, but a lot of fans wanted something newer.

With Star Wars: The Last Jedi however, Rian Johnson goes above and beyond to exceed expectations. Not only was the movie completely different from Empire Strikes Back, but it also gave us some whole new character arcs that was never in the original series or prequels. Now even hardcore fans of the franchise have no idea what to expect in Episode IX.

For now, catch Mark Hamill in Star Wars: The Last Jedi which is finally out in theaters.
