Star Wars The Last Jedi: Rian Johnson Was Terrified Of Killing Off [SPOILER]

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI]

Though a lot of fans agree that it was the best way to send him off, some still believe that Luke Skywalker should have lived to see the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Director Rian Johnson talks about the pressure to have Luke dying in the movie and the decisions that helped him go through with it.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Johnson admitted:

"I had huge hesitance. I was terrified. It was a growing sense of dread when I realized this was going to make sense in that chapter … I think the hero's journey of Luke Skywalker concluded in Return of the Jedi. This [trilogy] is the hero's journey of Rey, and Finn, and Poe. The [ongoing] story of Luke is one that has to play in tandem with that of Rey."

In the movie, Luke Skywalker uses the last of his power to help the Resistance escape, projecting a "Force-image" of himself to duel Kylo Ren. In the end, Luke, much like Obi-Wan, becomes one with the Force and disappears in front of a twin sunset.

Though I admit that it was a fitting end for Luke, I'm curious where the saga would be headed, what with Carrie Fisher's death. Mark Hamill had said that since the first movie focused on Han Solo, and the second on Luke, Leia would have the most to do with the third movie. Now with Leia gone, I'm wondering how they'll justify her absence in Episode IX.

You think Lando Calrissian is still doing anything important?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now out in theaters.
