Star Wars' John Boyega Calls Out Game of Thrones For Having 'No Black People'

John Boyega, the actor best known for playing Finn in the new Star Wars trilogy, just criticized Game of Thrones for its lack of diversity. In a recent interview with GQ, Boyega didn't hold back when it comes to sharing his opinion about the hit HBO epic fantasy series.

"There are no black people in Game of Thrones," Boyega said. "You don't see one black person in Lord of the Rings. I ain't paying money to always see one type of person on-screen."

"I ain't paying money to always see one type of person on-screen," Boyega added. "You see different people from different backgrounds, different cultures, every day. Even if you're racist, you have to live with that. We can ruffle up some feathers."

While Lord of the Rings didn't have much diversity, Game of Thrones does better, but not significantly.

In Season 1, there's Syrio Forel, the master sword-fighter hired by Eddard Stark to train Arya.

We're also introduced to Grey World, the captain of Daenerys' Unsullied Army, as well as Xaro Xhoan Daxos, the 'wealthy' man from Qarth who was trying to woo Daenerys. There's also Areo Hotah, the lead guard to the King of Dorne.

Ser Davos' pirate friend, Salladhor Saan, also appared in the show's second season.

A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin responded to a fan who slammed the show for casting few black characters it has as "servants, guards, or charlatans".

"Westeros around 300 AC is nowhere near as diverse as 21st century America, of course… but with that being said, I do have some 'characters of color' who will have somewhat larger roles in WINDS OF WINTER. Admittedly, these are secondary and tertiary characters, though not without importance," Martin said.

"Of course, I am talking about the books here, and you are talking about the show, which is a thing apart. I do think HBO and [showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] are doing what they can to promote diversity as well, as witness the casting of Areo Hotah, which you mention. Of course, Hotah IS a guard… but he is also a viewpoint character in the novels, a brave and loyal warrior."

Game of Throneshas also been criticized for Ed Sheeran's cameo in the Season 7 premiere.

Game of Thrones Season 7 continues this Sunday 9 p.m. EST on HBO.
