Shazam Casting Reveals New 52 Influence

Shazam is still in pre-production and reports have been pouring in about what we could see in the upcoming DC film. A recent report by That Hashtag Show revealed that Warner Bros is currently in the process of casting the supporting cast of the superhero. Interestingly enough, the descriptions for the roles seem to hint at the more diverse version of the Marvel Family seen in the New 52.

The studio is currently looking for young children to play as "Daniel", "Carlos" and "Suzy." It is believed that these supporting characters are actually Eugene Choi, Pedro Pena, and Darla Dudley, all of whom were adopted by a kind family sometime before Billy Batson. Batson's friend Freddy Freeman was also cast under a false "Frank" alias so that people aren't too suspicious.

Here are the descriptions for "Daniel," "Carlos," and "Suzy."

Daniel- 11, Korean. Daniel is a smart kid, into video games and reading non-fiction. SUPPORTING
Carlos- 15, Hispanic, overweight, with asthma. Carlos is very shy and sweet. SUPPORTING
Suzy- 8-10, African American. A sweet, bubbly girl with glasses and pigtails. SUPPORTING

As someone who has read the New 52 Shazam graphic novel comprised of all the eight-page backup stories from Justice League issues, these descriptions are pretty accurate to the New 52 supporting cast. This could also mean that Billy starts off as a bit of a mean kid who gradually warms up to his family, though they could just be taking what is needed for a proper adaptation. Spider-Man: Homecoming basically stole Miles Morales' friend Ganke and renamed him to Ned Leeds, so anything is possible.

Shazam will start shooting on February 4, 2018, and is scheduled to end on May 4 of that year. No news yet on who will be portraying Billy Batson and Shazam respectively.
