Karl Urban Reveals Why He Took Skurge Role In Thor: Ragnarok

There is little doubt that working on a Marvel Cinematic Universe film is every actor's dream job. Interestingly, Karl Urban only needed to know who he had to work with before he agreed to appear in Thor: Ragnarok.

Urban recently made an appearance at Dallas Fan Days 2018 (via ComicBook.com). The Star Trek actor admitted that he immediately signed on when he realized he would be working closely with Lord of the Rings co-star Cate Blanchett.

"I really enjoyed working Cate Blanchett, who- you know, we've been in Lord of The Rings together but didn't actually share any scenes together. You know that was one of the main reasons for me deciding to do that," Urban confessed.

The opportunity to work with Blanchett wasn't the only reason why Urban decided to play Skurge. The Dredd star also revealed that Taika Waititi contacted him personally and offered him the role.

"I got a call from Taika saying 'Listen, I'm shooting this movie, there's great role in it. Have a look at it. I'll send you some concept art of the character.' Which looked rad, shaved head, armor. I read the script and saw that there was quite a fantastic arch for the character and I really responded to that. That he was really a survivalist, that he started his journey in one place and then had to do a deal with the devil and the cost of that was and then how he really came back at the end and ended up doing the right thing morally, which was a fantastic little arch."

Skurge certainly had a cool storyline in Ragnarok. Although he started out as someone who could have ended up being a villain, he took a different path in the end.

Urban is ready to take on his next comic book role. He will play Billy Butcher in the new web series The Boys, which is based on the Garth Ennis comics.
