This article will discuss a few minor spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so those who haven’t seen the film and would rather much remain spoiler-free till they get to a cinema better head on out. Though Marvel fans already expect the legendary Stan Lee to make an appearance in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, many were surprised to find the comic writer and former president of Marvel Comics chatting up with the Watchers.

One of the oldest beings in the universe, the race of fictional extraterrestrials created by Lee and Jack Kirby are some of the characters whose film rights had been sold off to Sony like Spider-man and the Fantastic Four.

Speaking with SlashFilm, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained how these characters who have close ties to the Fantastic Four appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

“No. There’s joint custody with a number of things. There are certain characters that they have, but races that we share. If that makes sense?”

Feige also went on to explain some of the other post-credit sequences in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel to the publication.

“James is always throwing things to Stan and always getting Stan to try more things. And in one of those times, he said, he told the Watchers not to walk away and Stan just called after them as they’re walking away. And it was so funny that we put that at the very, very end of the movie. The Ayesha tag with Adam Warlock came up also towards the end of production, the beginning of post-production. To give her a little bit of an exit into the movie and more of a sort of solidifying her whole purpose in the movie. And like at the premiere they go “we’ll call him Adam.” People go “Oh, I wonder who Adam is?” When there are fans seeing the movie, they’ll know who Adam is.”

Marvel certainly knows how to hype up fans through its post-credit sequences – with the appearance of the Watchers some have already begun running wild and speculating how these extraterrestrials could influence the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it moves forward. However with Feige emphasizing that the race is simply co-owned, there’s no certainty on whether we’ll be getting more of the Watchers.
