The Defenders Costume Designer Accidentally Reveals Sigourney Weaver’s True Identity

There's been a lot of secrecy surrounding Sigourney Weaver's The Defenders villain, Alexandra. All that's been revealed so far is the characters name and her role as the Marvel Netflix team-up series' main baddie. However, now that the series is approaching its release this summer, Marvel has begun its marketing campaign for The Defenders.

There have been new posters, stills, videos, trailers and interviews with the cast and crew and it seems like a recent interview with one of the people working on The Defenders may have actually revealed the true identity of Weaver's enigmatic Alexandra.

Speaking with the International Business Times, Stephanie Maslansky, The Defenders costume designer, accidently revealed Alexandra's role as the leader of the Hand.

"I think that she's clearly a baddie, and she's the head of an ancient organization which is grounded in the comics. I hope that her wardrobe reflects that kind of ancientness. I hope I haven't said too much. I hope Marvel doesn't come after me."

"What's interesting about these characters is that our first director [S.J. Clarkson], the director that did episodes 1 and 2 of ‘The Defenders,' was able to — her idea was to really keep each superhero very distinct in terms of palette.

"There was a palette component to [Alexandra's] world too. I don't really want to get into that, but you can draw your own conclusions from what you've seen. [There is] a lot of depth to her wardrobe. A lot of life or lives to her wardrobe, I wanna say."

Though Marvel Comics does have quite a number of "ancient organizations," the Marvel Netflix television universe has been dealing with The Hand, and with evil Electra (Elodie Yung) back to wreck mayhem, it's pretty likely that Maslansky meant the group of evil mystical ninjas. This is a pretty big reveal from a costume designer – Maslansky may actually find herself in trouble for letting key information about Alexandra out to the public. With the way Marvel Studios has been guarding Alexandra's story, there's no doubt that they intended the Weaver's villain to be a surprise to fans.

The Defenders arrives on August 18, 2017.
