Chinese Figure Skater’s Routine Includes Star Wars Themes Like “Duel Of Fates”

It might be hard to imagine figure skating going hand in hand with the Star Wars saga, but it seems like Chinese figure skaters Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang were able to mix things up by using music from Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away for their 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games routine.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Chinese duo's compilation track for their performance included "Luke and Leia," a Star Wars theme which was taken from the original trilogy, and the intense theme song "Duel of Fates" taken from the prequel trilogy.

The International Skating Committee updated their rules for musical selections after the Olympic Games back in 2014, allowing athletes to pick songs with lyrics for their routines. However, while athlete's song selections this year included songs by Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, and Simon and Garfunkel, none could really compare to the sharp and intense vocalizations of the "Duel of Fates."

Yu and Zhang's choice of music is rather surprising though, considering how Star Wars isn't really that popular in China. The original trilogy didn't make its way till the 90s and the franchise never really gained that much traction. The Last Jedi even flopped in China last year.

Guess the two just have really great taste.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
