The New Mutants Director Hopes Disney Will Allow Him to Finish a Trilogy

We all thought that the Fox X-Men franchise had ended with Dark Phoenix, but we're getting one more return to the world with Josh Boone's The New Mutants. While everyone thinks this will be a one-and-done film, Boone is still hopeful that he'll be allowed to finish an entire trilogy.

Talking to SFX Magazine (via ComicBook), Boone admits, "Ultimately, after all this time, I was able to make MY New Mutants film, and I am proud of it… What I'm hoping for now is that it will be successful enough so the studio will allow me to complete a trilogy. I've got all planned out."

Before Disney had merged with Fox, a whole slew of X-Men spinoffs were planned from an X-Force movie to a solo Gambit film. Now that the MCU is set to reboot the X-Men for their universe, all Marvel Fox projects have been scrapped, and The New Mutants kind of feels like a bone that has been thrown at Boone; they're even letting him publish his original vision, which kind of suggests the studio doesn't care how the movie will be received.

Admittedly, interest for The New Mutants has been kind of a roller coaster. At one point it was the subject of ridicule after multiple delays and news of reshoots, but with the latest trailer out and news that Boone's vision will be kept, a lot of people are suddenly excited for the release.

We don't know when The New Mutants comes out, but hopefully it manages to send a message to studios to always respect the creative visions of the directors.
