Avengers: Endgame ended with Steve Rogers passing his shield over to Sam Wilson, and it looks like the MCU has already decided on its new Captain America. Anthony Mackie, who plays Falcon in the films, talks about what it felt like to be given the opportunity to be one of the next leading Avengers.
Mackie tells IMDb, "It's like being handed the Oscar, for me. For Chris to be like: ‘Here's the shield', that's like ‘and Best Actor goes to'…" Mackie also goes on to talk about the cultural significance of having a black Captain America. He goes on:
"It means a lot for my sons to be able to see Captain America as a black dude. That means a lot, to me. And to be that dude for my sons. So that thank you, that moment, wasn't just about ‘Hey, we're acting'. It's like a lot of things have gone right twenty years in this business and for that to happen."
While I'm expecting to have some solo movies with Mackie as the new Cap, I think we'll see him grow into the mantle with Disney+'s Falcon and the Winter Soldier series. Mackie has confirmed that he doesn't know where the show will go yet, but he offers his speculation on what the series will be about:
"I haven't read anything, I haven't seen a new suit, I haven't seen anything. What I'm guessing…Bucky and I go off on a worldwind adventure to save the world and find life after Captain America."
With the Marvel Netflix shows cancelled, a lot of pressure is on Disney+ to deliver a whole different quality of miniseries. This time around, Kevin Feige is directly involved, and hopefully these shows will tie in more directly to the films as compared to the Netflix and ABC shows which just casually reference the MCU and have no lasting impact to the stories.
No release date has been announced for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but you can catch both in Avengers: Endgame now in theaters.
