Avengers: Endgame Co-Director on Why Bucky Didn't Get The Shield

Avengers: Endgame was home to many a shocking moment, which was expected since the film was billed as the bookend to a number of the MCU's long-running stories. This ended up being true and it's easy to see why this movie has made so much money, so here is hoping that it dethrones Avatar, though that might not happen thanks to Detective Pikachu coming out this weekend.

While nothing shocked the system like Iron Man's death, many were still shocked to see Steve Rogers pass the shield on to Sam Wilson, who most of us know as The Falcon. Though comic book fans are familiar with Wilson being Captain America, they were pretty surprised to not see Bucky take up the mantle since Barnes did this during Ed Brubaker's stellar Captain America run.

Joe Russo was asked about Bucky not getting the shield by ComicBook.com and he had a pretty good answer; Bucky has been subject to mind control before and it's too soon to say if Shuri really fixed him completely.

"Cap and Bucky are brothers but you know what's interesting about them is they're very different people and I think that Bucky always has the ability to have his mind corrupted, it can always be taken over by someone else. That hasn't been resolved for him and Sam has his free will and I think that Sam also had a similar ethic as Cap as far as service goes in the military. Sam still retains that spirit of service to the community and he lives in that circle very clearly in the movies. Comic books and movies are very different and our interpretation of the characters if you've been following the movies are very different from what the books are so as it stands in these films, Bucky is still a damaged character who I think feels like he doesn't want the shield and I think that ultimately Sam is a character with free will who is the closest in morality to what Cap was and Cap believes he deserves it."

It's not yet confirmed if we will get a new Captain America movie starring Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson but he will be in a Disney+ series called Falcon and Winter Soldier, which will probably deal with Sam taking up the mantle. Expect Bucky to talk him into the role while they battle some C-list villain. Here's hoping for Batroq.

Avengers: Endgame is now showing in theaters.
