The recently-aired Episode 3 of X-Men '97 addressed the shocking cliffhanger regarding the mysterious Jean Grey clone that showed up at the end of the second episode.

Since the episode aired, a lot of fans have speculated that the Jean Grey clone is actually Madelyne Pryor since she is notoriously known for that in the comics and the series is seemingly going to explore that with the doppelganger reveal.

However, the identity of the Jean Grey clone wasn't the only twist that they have in store as Episode 3 also featured a shocking revelation that changed what we know of the character.

Episode 3 of X-Men '97 picked up right after where we were left off at the end of the second episode where a Jean Grey clone unexpectedly showed up on the doorsteps of the X-Mansion.

Beast conducted a test on the clone and it revealed that it was actually the real Jean Grey while the Jean Grey that we've been seeing in the series up to that point is the clone.

In other words, the Jean Grey who married Cyclops, became pregnant, and gave birth to Nathan Summers is the clone all this time.

The Jean Grey clone transformed into the powerful Goblin Queen under the control of Mister Sinister and took the baby to the villain's laboratory. She also subjected the X-Men to different nightmare visions.

Morph realized that Mister Sinister was the mastermind and he led the X-Men to his laboratory to confront the villain and the Goblin Queen. A fight ensued between them.

The real Jean was able to telepathically confront the Goblin Queen and remind her of the memories that they shared. The Goblin Queen was able to snap out of control and turned against Mister Sinister.

However, it was too late for them to stop Mister Sinister as Nathan had already been infected by a techno-organic virus.

Jean and Cyclops decided to have Bishop take Nathaniel to the future in the hope of finding a cure. Meanwhile, the clone, who has decided to take the name of Madelyne Pryor, left the X-Mansion to forge her own path somewhere.

While fans were right about the Madelyne Pryor theory, it was still a shocking twist since it changed the trajectory of Jean Grey's journey in the series and also changed the characterization of Madelyne, who is usually portrayed as a villain unlike in the series where they gave more depth to her.
