The Russo Brothers Explain How Misdirection Fooled Fans And Kept Avengers: Infinity War Fresh

There were certainly a lot of surprises in Avengers: Infinity War, and according to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, a lot of the twists involved a bit of trickery during the film's marketing.

Speaking in a recent interview with Variety, Avengers co-director Joe Russo was asked about Infinity War and how the film's promotional material and trailers helped keep the film's twists and turns a secret. The Russo brothers worked hard at keeping spoilers from leaking online, and it looks like the directors also had the film's marketing material misdirect fans so that they could keep the element of surprise in Infinity War.

"We do our best work when we follow our instincts and tell the story we want to tell," Joe explained during the interview. "We've had one or two experiences early in our careers where we didn't do that and we learned a very hard lesson: When you try to predict what an audience wants, you're going to make mush. When you commit to the story you want to tell, it tends to have a much more resonant impact on the audience … The audience can tell you they love chocolate ice cream, but if you give it to them every day, they're going to get sick of it real fast. You've got to stay ahead of them."

Though fans felt like they already knew where the film was headed and which characters might kick the bucket in the film, Avengers: Infinity War definitely went the other way. Taking the film away from what fans might have expected, the Russo brothers managed to keep Infinity War fresh, making fans look for more.

It's definitely exciting thinking about what the Russo brothers have in store for us in Avengers 4. Though we already have some sort of vague idea what might happen in the Infinity War sequel, we do have a feeling that the Russo brothers might turn things the other way again and we definitely can't wait to be surprised.
