Rian Johnson Talks About The New Star Wars Trilogy

Star Wars fans weren't expecting big announcements from Lucasfilm with Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiering in less than a month's time, but last week the studio took everyone by surprise, dropping news that they were building another Star Wars trilogy after Episode IX and giving the reigns over to director Rian Johnson.

Now, as the Last Jedi approaches its release, Johnson's decided to talk more about the new trilogy that he's been assigned to build at a press event for The Force Awakens sequel (via Comicbook).

According to the filmmaker, he's still at the very beginning of planning the new trilogy.

"We're gonna have to see," Johnson explained. "I'm just at the very beginning of starting to come up with what the new trilogy is going to be. What makes me so excited about it, is the idea of doing a new story on the big canvas of three movies in this world. There's just so much potential and I can't wait to jump into it."

Knowing Johnson's knack for adding new elements to the franchise, fans can't wait to learn more about the new trilogy. Not only has the filmmaker brought in new creatures like the Porgs and the Crystal Foxes into The Last Jedi, he's also given the film a darker shade, hinting that Rey (Daisy Ridley) might join Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and head towards the Dark Side.

Who knows what's in store for us in the new trilogy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres December 15, 2017.
