Rian Johnson Says The Last jedi Won’t Be A Homage To Other Star Wars Movies

Star Wars: The Force Awakens might have successfully revived the Star Wars franchise, however fans felt like the film simply took too many notes from A New Hope.

Now that the Star Wars sequel trilogy is moving on to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the community is worrying that the film might end up being another homage to older installments in the franchise.

However, director Rian Johnson promises that audiences won't feel that way at all with The Force Awakens sequel. The filmmaker just recently went on an interview with SciFiNow Magazine (via Sleemo Tumblr ), and during the interview Johnson addressed the concern that The Last Jedi would end up being a rehash of Return of The Jedi.

"It's very interesting, the idea of the inescapable draw of nostalgia, because it's there and it's impossible to deny the emotional reaction that I have walking onto the interior of the Falcon. I guess I'd be hesitant to use the word ‘homage' because that makes it sound like it's just kind of turning the crank and replaying an old tune because we all like it. But telling a story that brings new things and pushes everything forward in an interesting way, that is in this world that we all recognize, there's something very powerful about that."

It certainly feels that way too. Not only has Johnson added creatures like Porgs and Silver Foxes in The Last Jedi, but Lucasfilm has also marketed the film as one of the darkest installments in the sequel trilogy, teasing sudden twists and surprises like Rey (Daisy Ridley) potentially turning to the Dark Side.

We can't wait to see all the new things that Johnson's bringing to the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
