Oscar Isaacs Had To Convince J.J. Abrams To Keep Poe Alive In The Force Awakens

Simply appearing in a Star Wars movie would have been enough for most Hollywood actors, but Oscar Isaacs wanted to make sure that his character Poe Dameron would stay alive before signing on to J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Isaacs just recently spoke with Esquire (via Comicbook) about his work in the Star Wars franchise, and during his discussion with the publication, the actor openly admitted that he was a bit hesitant to take the role, saying that he wasn't just there to die on screen.

"I said that I wasn't sure because I had already done that role in other movies where you kind of set it up for the main people and then you die spectacularly," the Star Wars star explained. "What's funny is that [producer] Kathleen Kennedy was in the room and she was like, 'Yeah, you did that for us in Bourne!'"

Isaacs has died a number of times on the big screen. In The Bourne Legacy his character gets blown up to bits right in a cabin, Drive's main narrative gets a jumpstart from Isaac's character's death, and in the independent science fiction movie Ex Machina, Isaacs gets ripped apart by a robot.

Poe Dameron was supposed to die after he and Finn (John Boyega) crash on Jakku in their attempt to escape the First Order, however, Isaac's requests kept the character alive to fight another day in the galaxy far, far away.

Now, Dameron's one of the sequel trilogy's most important players, and we can't wait and see what kind of mission he's going on in The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres December 15, 2017.
