Rian Johnson Confirms Finn and Rose’s Adventure In The Last Jedi’s Casino Planet

Sometimes Star Wars rumors really do hit the mark. Last month, word came out that Star Wars: The Last Jedi would feature a new Casino Planet called Canto Bight. Said to have its exteriors shot in Croatia and its interiors in the Pinewood Studios, the planet was rumored to be the spot where John Boyega's Finn gathers intel on the First Order.

Now, in an interview with Vanity Fair for its Star Wars 40th Anniversary cover story, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson confirms the rumors. Explaining that the planet serves as the sequel trilogy's version of the Cantina from A New Hope, the director reveals that Canto Bight will indeed be visited by Finn and Kelly Marie Tran's Rose. The only difference is that the scene on the casino planet would be much lighter when compared with the rest of the movie which Johnson calls "a dirge."

"Rose and Finn's adventure takes them to, among other places, another Johnson innovation: a glittering casino city called Canto Bight, ‘a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief.' It was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe. I was thinking, O.K., let's go ultra-glamour. Let's create a playground, basically, for rich assholes."

Johsnon also explains why he's bringing Finn and Rose to the Canto Bight.

"I didn't want this to be a dirge, a heavy-osity movie. So one thing I've tried really hard to do is keep the humor in there, to maintain the feeling, amid all the heavy operatic moments, that you're on a fun ride."

While Johnson does hope to bring about a fun bright feel of the Cantina, the aesthetic appeal of the Canto Bight looks far from the scummy watering hole in Tatooine. The director is probably planning some sort of Cantina-ish scuffle to go down in this planet full of "rich assholes."

Also featuring Daisy Ridley,Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong'o Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Benicio Del Toro, , and Laura Dern, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to premiere on December 15, 2017.
