Olivia Munn Was Supposed to Play This Key Character in Deadpool

Olivia Munn will be joining the comic book movie genre this summer playing the mutant Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse. As it turns out, Apocalypse wasn't the first 20th Century Fox superhero film offer that she's gotten.

According to a recent article in American Way, the 35-year-old actress was supposed to play the role of Vanessa Carlysle in Tim Miller's Deadpool – that is if she hadn't turned down the role. Apparently, Munn rejected the role when she received the offer because she thought Vanessa to be another stereotypical "girlfriend" character.

Worth noting is the fact that Munn even scrutinized Psylocke before she made the decision to play the X-Men: Apocalypse role. As stated by Munn:

I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters, and I said, ‘Yes, as long as you're not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities.' And they said, ‘Yes, that's an important part.'

While Morena Baccarin's Vanessa is indeed Deadpool's girlfriend, I think she's far from the stereotypical "girlfriend" character some people may think her to be. She certainly isn't a damsel in distress and for the most part, she was able to create a healthy and balanced relationship with a mercenary like Wade Wilson. In the comics though, Vanessa had superpowers. While Rhett Reese explained before why they didn't make Vanessa a mutant, there's still a possibility of that in Deadpool 2.

That said, if Olivia Munn considered the role of Vanessa, it still is far from being your typical girlfriend.

Nevertheless, Munn's decision to play Psylocke would irrevocably put her career on a different direction. It's still quite exciting to find out how much the character enjoys killing in X-Men: Apocalypse.

The film hits theaters on May 27.
