Deadpool Writer Rhett Reese Reveals Why This Character Didn’t Turn Into a Mutant

If you're reading this, you've probably seen Deadpool by now. But if you haven't seen the movie yet, you can skip this article lest you want any spoilers.

Deadpool is one of those comic book films that has stayed most faithful to its source material. There are several exceptions however, and one of these is Morena Baccarin's character, Vanessa.

In the Marvel Comics, she's supposed to turn into a shapeshifting mutant called Copycat, who sort of have the same abilities as the X-Men's Mystique.

Well, if you're wondering why Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick chose to overlook this detail, there's a perfectly good explanation. Apparently, Reese and Wernick didn't want viewers to get confused. Last week, we reported the same explanation as to why two important characters have been cut from the film. It's the same with Vanessa.

Cinema Blend asked Reese about Copycat, and he explained:

We did toy with [the idea], you know, but again, there was so much for the audience... We're introducing a new character to the world, and so we didn't want to muddy the waters with, ‘Wait a second, she's also a mutant?'
So hopefully, we'll see what happens if we're afforded the opportunity to move forward on this world. It's something that would probably be worth exploring at some point.

The good news is, Fox has already given Deadpool 2 the green light, so that means Vanessa will most likely be featured in there, especially since her chemistry with Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson/Deadpool) is undeniable. Now with what Reese said about Copycat, there's also a chance for Vanessa turning into a mutant after all.

Right now, no new details have been revealed about Deadpool 2 other than the appearance of Cable, a time traveling, bionic armed mutant. It would definitely be awesome seeing Vanessa/Copycat fighting side by side with Deadpool if she is turned into a mutant.

For now, we can only wait for further announcements.
