New Ghostbusters Film Will Get an Extended Blu-ray Cut

An extended cut of the new Ghostbusters movie will be coming out on Blu-ray, revealed director Paul Feig via Collider. Feig talked about the process of making the movie. The extended cut of the film will be 2 hours and 11 minutes, which is 15 minutes longer than the version that will be in theatres.

Feig revealed that the editors original cut of Ghostbusters was 4 hours and 15 minutes, which he then trimmed down to 3 and a half hours before finally paring it down to under two hours. As Collider notes, this is fairly standard practice for comedies. The DVD will feature a lot of deleted scenes and extra content in addition to the extended cut.

Feig explained the difficulty of trimming down a movie. He said "We generate a lot of stuff and I always want to have all the underpinnings of a big, emotional story. And because of that, it just added a lot of extra scenes that as you're going through, you have to make a lot of choices because I knew I had to bring this down under two hours." He went on to say that he made his decision on what to cut based on what he thought peopled wanted to delve deeper into.

Feig promised that the extra content in the extended cut will have finished visual effects and will not be a rough version. He said "It's actually some stuff that we finished the VFX on just because we wanted to have this nice-looking extended cut too, so it was very kind of the studio to let us finish all of that."

The new Ghostbusters will be released in theatres this Friday. Despite the controversy surrounding the reboot, the movie has gotten pretty good reviews from critics so far, earning a not-too-shabby aggregated score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. This has apparently caused some more vitrolic fans to get pretty upset and try to filter out the positive reviews, despite the fact they haven't seen the movie for themselves.

Since things are looking pretty bright for the quality of the Ghostbusters movie based on early reviews, I'll be interested to see the extended cut and if it's any better or worse. What about you? Are you down for an extended cut of the Ghostbusters movie?
