Original Ghostbusters Director Ivan Reitman Defends Reboot and Discusses Backlash

The director of the original Ghostbusters movie, Ivan Reitman, expressed his endorsement of the new Ghostbusters reboot and discussed the backlash in an interview with Mashable. The interview also unveiled a new image from the movie, which you can see above. Reitman praised the main team of the movies, played by Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig, saying "Individually and together, they're as unique as Bill Murray and Aykroyd and Ramis and Hudson were.

He discussed the backlash the movie has received and said he does not agree that all of the movie's pre-release crtics are necessarily misogynists. He states, "I think that many of the people who were complaining were actually lovers of the [original] movie, not haters of women".

Reitman also said he didn't want to dismiss all the critics as trolls."Everybody is my audience. Whether they like what I did or didn't like it," However, he notes that the crtics haven't actually seen the movie yet and goes onto say he still thinks the movie is a good experience. "I've certainly had my experience with things that did not work. This movie works, [but] no one's really seen it."

He blames the trailer for a lot of the backlash against the movie and admits it didn't do the film justice. "I think we got off to a bad start. It wasn't so much that the trailer was bad or terrible. In its minute and a half, it couldn't represent what the movie actually is."

He goes onto say he respects people's nostagia over the original movie, but asks that they give this new one a shot before dismissing it. "All I am asking is that they give the film a shot.I think it is a very satisfying and wonderful experience on its own [and] I think most people are going to go with it."

The new Ghostbusters film is set to come out July 15.

I think some of the critics fo the new film, like the ones who sent the actresses slurs and racist pictures, are definitely bigoted, but I agree with Reitman that there are probably some critics who are just concerned on the basis of not finding the trailer that good. I think we should listen to Reitman and not write the movie off before seeing it though. You can't really give an informed opinion on something that hasn't come out. What do you think? Do you agree with Reitman? Will you give the new Ghostbusters a chance?
