Marvel Details T'Challa's First Year As King In Rise Of The Black Panther

Marvel has announced Rise of theBlack Panther, a Year One-esque story that details the first year of T'Challa's time as king of Wakanda. This will act as a pseudo-prequel to the current run of Black Panther by Ta-Nehisi Coates, making it an essential buy to those picking up the comic. Interestingly enough, Rise will be written by Evan Narcisse from iO9, the website's resident comic book fan. Unsurprisingly, iO9 broke the news regarding the comic.

The first arc of the series will focus on T'Challa's efforts to make Wakanda known to the world, which upsets many of his people. Wakanda was a secret city, so it will be interesting to see how T'Challa takes all the criticism and hate from his people. It's a bit ironic actually since Coates' run portrayed Black Panther as the status quo of Wakanda, rather than the change he sets out to be in this prequel.

Narcisse also said that we will see how Wakanda's technology evolves. He jokingly claimed that there would be giant panther mechs, which would be awesome. Coates and Narcisse will be working closely with each other so that their work shows a new side of T'Challa.

Riseof the Black Panther #1 comes out in January 2018. No artist has been named yet, though expect one to pop up by the time the January solicitations hit.
