Black Panther Was Visually Inspired By Blade Runner

The original Blade Runner is considered to be one of the most influential films in sci-fi, and it still continues to influence several movies today—the latest of which is Marvel Studios' upcoming Black Panther movie.

Black Panther production designer Hanna Beachler confirms this on Twitter with a fan exchange:

With Blade Runner being hyped up with the release of the sequel, a lot of people are going back to the 1980s classic. Looking at it today, you can say that the film was definitely a visual marvel. And though the movie can be considered quite dragging by some, there's still a lot of great things to pick apart from it production-wise.

As for the city of Wakanda, it looks to be a unique mix of technological advancement and culture. In the trailers we still see people holding traditional weapons, but it's somehow given a futuristic twist. Sure a lot of attention is going out for Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War, but hopefully Black Panther enters the spotlight after Ragnarok ends its theatrical run.

Here's the synopsis for the film:

Marvel Studios' Black Panther follows T'Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T'Challa's mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

Black Panther comes out Feb. 16, 2018.
