Marvel Almost Greenlit A War Machine Movie

Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 might not be the best films in the MCU but most fans can agree that the action and performances were entertaining. Robert Downey Jr. might be the biggest star of the MCU and everyone enjoyed seeing Don Cheadle as War Machine, replacing Terrence Howard in the sequel. Apparently, Marvel enjoyed Cheadle's performance as well since it was recently revealed that a War Machine film was in the works at one point.

Joe Robert Cole, one of the writers for Black Panther, told Complex that Marvel was interested in making a solo film for the Iron Man supporting character. Cole said he even successfully pitched a concept for the film and was tasked with writing that film's script. However, after the events of Iron Man 3, plans changed. Though Cole wasn't able to write the film, he was offered a position in the Marvel writers program.

At that meeting, they also said they were thinking of doing a War Machine movie. I pitched a concept and won that job to write the script but they decided, based on what Iron Man 3 was going to be, they weren't going to do War Machine anymore. But they asked if I'd be interested in joining their writer's program instead.

Now, James "Rhodey" Rhodes might not be most people's choice for a solo film but he has been the lead in a number of comic books. He once took over for Tony Stark as Iron Man when his friend has alcohol problems. Rhodes then starred in a number of short-lived solo comics, mostly as War Machine and one time as the Iron Patriot.

Don Cheadle will return as Rhodey in Avengers: Infinity War on May 4. He will likely appear in the May 3, 2019, sequel.
