Skydance New Media has unveiled a trailer for its upcoming Marvel action-adventure title, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. The trailer shows the unbelievable graphical capabilities of the Unreal Engine 5.4 update.

Amy Hennig, the founder of Skydance New Media, stepped onto the stage during last week’s GDC 2024's State of Unreal segment to present Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, demonstrating the upcoming game’s graphics and explain how the Unreal Engine 5.4 aided in the game design. Hennig also previewed a 2-minute, 25-second trailer featuring a few cut scenes and gameplay footage.

The trailer revealed five interesting details about the new Marvel game directed by Hennig, who also led the development of the first three Uncharted games.

First, the game is set in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1943. Captain America and the World War 2 Black Panther, Azzuri the Wise, and future King T’challa’s grandfather are racing against each other towards an unknown objective and will cross paths many times throughout the story.

Other characters like Gabriel Jones and Nanali support Azzuri and Steve Rogers. Jones is an American soldier who appears to be part of the Howling Commandos, the group that Captain America leads in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. At the same time, Nanali is a Wakandan spy working for the Black Panther.

There is at least one confirmed confrontation between the two heroes. Near the trailer’s end, Captain America catches up to King Azzuri and engages him in combat after a short conversation in which the Wakandan calls him “unworthy” of the shield.

Marvel 1943 uses the Nanite Tesselation technology included with Unreal Engine 5.4. This technology ensures the game boasts unprecedented graphical detail without consuming too many GPU resources.

Last but not least, Marvel 1943 will be released in 2025. However, no specific release date or information about which platforms will be available exists.

Amy Henning and Skydance New Media are helming another game, this time in the Star Wars universe. Dominic Robilliard, who directed Star Wars 1313 before it was canceled, will join the Uncharted creative director on this project.
