Kingsman 3 Director Hints at Work on Threequel

Current movies have a bigger danger of suffering from sequelitis. Since the common basis for a sequel is not just the story but also the performance of the first movie in the box office, a top-billing original hit may be continued without proper planning.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle director Matthew Vaughn knows a little about this, considering how Kick-Ass went from really great to a major meh with its sequel. That's why the sequel to 2015's Kingsman is welcomed with caution.

The trailer is obviously great, with a lot more action and spy stuff from Taron Egerton_. But it's also good to hear that the continuation is bridging the story further, with a threequel already factored into the narrative's plans.

Speaking with Deadline, Vaughn revealed that they were already considering the third movie.

"Weirdly while we were writing Kingsman 2, we were thinking of Kingsman 3 as well, which is odd. We've got a big idea for that. This is sort of the bridge and if we can pull this off, we'll make another one."

A few early viewings of a portion of Kingsman: The Golden Circle seemed to suggest that Vaughn went into the sequel carrying some lessons learned from Kick-Ass 2. He revealed that he understands how sequels are usually supposed to enhance the experience--but end up not doing so a lot of the time.

But from the looks of it, the next installment will see a lot more action and violence to merit its R-rating, but not without sacrificing what made the first one a true hit; that is, the great dialogue and story.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle will be out in theaters on Sept. 22.
