Joss Whedon’s Batgirl To Release Before Wonder Woman Sequel


There was a lot of excitement and controversy when Warner Bros. announced that it was working on a feature film for one of Batman's most popular sidekicks, Barbara Gordon's Batgirl. Not only would the project be the first standalone movie for Barbara, it also marks as Joss Whedon's very first film in the DC Expanded Universe.

With Whedon behind the wheels of the upcoming film, it seems like Warner Bros. plans to bring Batgirl full front and center as the DCEU's second female-led superhero movie. Sources at the Chinese red carpet event for Wonder Woman have just confirmed on Twitter that Deborah Snyder has announced that Batgirl would come right before Wonder Woman 2, making the film the second female-fronted DCEU comicbook movie.

This is definitely good news for Barbara's fans. Given that the project is in its early pre-production stages with Whedon as the film's director, it's possible that Batgirl may get a 2019 release date sometime before or after Shazam.

There isn't any news on the synopsis of the film just yet, however during Warner Bros. also revealed during the Batgirl announcement that the movie would be based on the DC New 52 Batgirl comic series by Gail Simone. We'll update everyone as soon as we get more information on Batgirl.

For now, DC fans should to get ready for the first DCEU film of the year, Patty Jenkin's Wonder Woman, which releases on June 2, 2017.
