James Gunn Didn’t Plan To Help Set Up Infinity War With His Script For GOTG 2

Marvel's various movies in its cinematic universe might have Easter Eggs and hooks that help its films connect to one another, but Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn says he actually wrote Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's script without any instructions for universe building by the studio.

Gunn might be in the middle of a wild controversy right now after being fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after a smear campaign brought back offensive and inappropriate tweets the director had made fourteen years ago, but before the circus, the filmmaker joined the Director's Roundtable for Avengers: Infinity War's home release.

Now that the film is available on Digital HD, fans get to learn more about Gunn's process for his films, and in the video (via Screen Rant), the director explains how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was more or less an independent Marvel movie.

"I didn't ever have an ending for what Guardians 2 was supposed to be. I didn't have a single story point that was ever discussed with Marvel before I wrote the story. So where that movie ends up, with Nebula going off and doing her thing, that's what I mean by, people, we kind of do our own little thing. We write our own little story and then it goes off to [the Russos]. And I gave these guys a script very, very early on. And they were, like, 'That's perfect, because that works great for us with where Nebula is, what we want to do with the story.' And it goes off."

It must have been pretty lucky for Marvel that Nebula's arc fit right in with their plans for Avengers: Infinity War. The sisters might have had a lot of issues during the first and second GOTG movies, but by the end of Vol. 2 Gamora and Nebula managed to resolve their conflict. All that's left between the sisters is their hatred for Thanos, with Nebula hurrying off to kill their father. Even though it wasn't part of Marvel's plan, Gunn's GOTG sequel carefully explained the dynamic between the sisters, therefore explaining Gamora and Nebula's dynamic with their adoptive father Thanos and preparing fans for Infinity War.

Avengers 4 hits cinemas May 3, 2019.
