Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2: Director James Gunn Says You Shouldn't Worry About Spoilers

It's no secret that James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has already started screening in several other countries before it comes out in the US, and a lot of fans have been bombarded with spoilers about the movie online. Gunn, however, has written a message for those fans who think they've been "spoiled" with the movie, and says that reading spoilers won't really ruin the experience.

He writes:

If you can't read the whole thing, here's a few highlights of the message:

"I don't get very angry over this stuff for a few reasons. Firstly, there are bigger things in the world today to get angry about than some poor sap who has the need to spoil movies online. Secondly, I'm grateful not to BE that poor sap clambering for attention from the solitude of keyboard and screen by spoiling, which cannot be a particularly fulfilling venture for anyone."

"There are studies that show spoilers don't really spoil anything. In a good story, our brains feel just as much pleasure whether or not we know the plot point ahead of time – and a new sort of pleasure emerges when we're piecing together the story we know is leading to some already-known element."

"Not only because spoilers don't matter, but because we've created a movie where the story, humor, visuals, music, and emotion don't rely on surprises even if they did, and that you'll have a blast whether or not you know a spoiler or two before going in."

I've read the same kind of article before, and I can admit that there is a certain truth to the "spoilers don't spoil anything" theory. As a matter of fact, I found myself enjoying Zack Snyder's Man of Steel a lot more the second time around — the first time I found the movie dragging as hell.

Then again, certain plot points don't have the same impact that they do if you already know the story beforehand. Would Star Wars had been more impactful if you knew from the very beginning that Darth Vader was Luke's father? How about Christopher Nolan's The Prestige? That movie was all about the big reveals!

Personally, I've already watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 twice, and I found it even more enjoyable the second time around. So I guess movies do get more fun if you know how they turn out? It's pretty complicated.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5.
