Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Director Discusses Star Lord and His Relationship with His Father

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is going to making its way to the big screen this year, and Marvel fans are as excited as ever to see where director James Gunn takes his ragtag crew of space vagabonds. One of the points of interest in the film is the debut of Star Lord's (Chris Pratt) elusive father, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell). Referenced only by name in the original Guardians of the Galaxy, Ego and his son's relationship become a central thread in the upcoming Marvel movie.

Speaking in an interview with the USA Today, Gunn reveals how important Peter Quill and Ego's connection is in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. Family continues to be a focal point in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and according to Gunn, Quill will learn about the reality of his relationship with his father.

"To let somebody love you is a very difficult thing, especially when you're damaged goods. And all of the Guardians are damaged goods." New cosmic foes stand in their way, but Quill's parentage again plays a key role: As much as the first movie focused on his relationship with his mother, Pratt says Vol. 2 focuses on Quill's origin in terms of his space-traveler father (Kurt Russell). "It runs the gamut of emotions for him, wanting to understand why his father wasn't around to quickly idolizing him and ultimately learning the reality of the relationship and comparing the man who sired him to the man who raised him."

While previous promotional material for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 promised fans another fun-filled space romp in the galaxy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this new bit from Gunn reveals that the sequel's going to tackle some heavy themes as soon as it hits the big screen.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is slated for release in cinemas on May 5 this year.
