The fourth God of War game, not called God of War 4 for some reason, is one of the most anticipated video game releases coming out this year. Some say that the lack of a number is somewhat fitting since the gameplay has been completely changed from its predecessors, while still retaining a heavy focus on combat.
What hasn't really been mentioned is the fact that it's a true single-player experience. Recent years has seen a renewed focus on multiplayer games, so seeing a single-player game with over 20-plus hours of gameplay is great.
During an interview with PlayStation Lifestyle, God of War director Cory Barlog discussed the importance of single-player video games. While he doesn't attack multiplayer titles, he feels that gamers often underestimate how satisfying a good single-player experience can be.
"I have literally nothing against, you know, multiplayer or cooperative [games]. Even the concept of, you know, microtransactions when done under in a format of like, "here's the game for free, pay what you want." That's a great concept, right? It can be misused for certain, but I think for single-player games, for the concept of saying, here's a narrative experience told from the point of view of a director and an amazing team that is going to transport you into a world and take you on an adventure and really deliver on the promises that they make. There's nothing like that, man. I hope we never lose that from the game industry."
God of War comes out on April 20 and is a PS4 exclusive.
