Game of Thrones Actor Gets a Role in a Spy Thriller

The full cast of Game of Thrones for season 7—and any surprises that may come with it—has not yet been confirmed. However, one particular star whom everyone pretty much hopes to see back in the next season may not return.

Joe Dempsie, known for his role as Gendry the bastard son of King Baratheon, has been cast in Fox's Deep State, Variety confirmed. Production has already started for the series, and it's bound to be a spy thriller.

According to the source, the series is created by Matthew Parkhill and Simon Maxwell. Other stars that have been cast for the series include Mark Strong and Karima McAdams. Deep State is also expected to be shown in Europe and Africa, the first show meant for a regional script.

"It's wonderful to be starting production on Deep State, knowing that we have such a strong and interesting company of actors to bring to life Matthew and the team's fantastic scripts. We couldn't be happier that we will soon be taking delivery of our first regional scripted commission."

Deep State is only set to be an eight-part thriller, but Dempsie will have quite the role as gifted secret agent Harry Clark.

Now the question is whether or not this will affect Dempsie's chances of returning to Game of Thrones for the seventh season. There has been speculation that he will reprise his role as Gendry who was last seen back in season 3 rowing away from the action. During this season's production, he was spotted in Belfast, where a lot of Game of Thrones stars have been spotted for filming.

Technically, production for Game of Thrones season 7 has already wrapped up. Perhaps the timing is just right for him to have squeezed in some Gendry filming during his time in Belfast.

And if ever his role becomes expanded in relation to the current battle for the throne, it's possible that filming for the last season won't interfere with Deep State.

Game of Thrones is slated to return on HBO come July 16.
