Fox CEO Describes New Mutants As A Horror Film With Super Powers

New Mutants is one of the more interesting installments of the X-Men movie franchise. The movie will feature a cast of familiar characters from the comics and will adapt the acclaimed Demon Bear arc. It's one of the more well-known stories from the group's comics, and if this interview means anything it could be a scary one.

Stacey Snider, the new CEO of Fox, told Variety that the movie has a horror aesthetic. While it does focus on the mutants trying to learn how to control their powers, the characters will also be in a The Shining/Cuckoo's Nest-like scenario. It will be interesting to see how the Demon Bear is implemented in the movie, but it should make for an intriguing experience.

Here is what Snider had to say about the movie:

"New Mutants" is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It's like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they're dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a "Breakfast Club" detention/"Cuckoo's Nest" institutional setting. It protects the people on the outside, but it's strange and combustible inside. The genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven't seen a superhero movie whose genre is more like "The Shining" than "we're teenagers let's save the world."

We haven't really seen any superhero movies mixed with horror, so this could be a breath of fresh air. Superhero fatigue is a phrase that gets thrown a lot right now, due to a number of films coming from Marvel, DC and more. Logan and Deadpool were able to breathe new life into the genre, and Fox is hoping New Mutants does the same thing.

New Mutants will come to theaters on April 13, 2018. How scary will it be? We're bound to find out soon enough.
