At Nintendo's E3 2017 press conference, the company has revealed a new trailer for Super Mario Odyssey, and a launch date for the Nintendo Switch game. This is definitely going to be on top of many fans' lists on why we should own a Nintendo Switch, and the trailer shows a lot of cool new mechanics we've never seen in any Mario game before. It's been a while since Nintendo last released a Mario game with open-world exploration, so the return to the form is exciting. It looks like the game's themes take inspiration from real-world locations like New York and Mexico City.

Watch the trailer below:

Nintendo announced that the launch date for the game: October 27, but that's not the only thing the company revealed. The living hat is called "cappy", and it's actually a magical white top-hat that takes the form of Mario's iconic cap and gives him new abilities. For instance, Mario can use the hat's abilities on telephone wires in New Donk City to transform himself into a bolt of electricity so he can travel across power lines. The hat can also be used to possess enemies, control dinosaurs, turn Mario into a rocket, and much more.

The hat can be used as a weapon to throw at enemies as well. And Mario can 'hold' the hat in a fixed position in the air for a few moments, which players can use it as a impromptu platform. In the game, there are no lives but instead, a failure will deduct ten coins from Mario's walllet. Coins can also be used to buy different outfits and items in the game's shops, and some missions can't be completed unless Mario is wearing the right costume.

In the game, Mario must collect Moons just like the power stars from previous games, and they are earned by completing challenges, beating boss enemies, finishing stages, and collecting coins. They also fuel the Odyssey (a hat-shaped ship that trasports Mario between playable worlds.)

The game's story is cliche: Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach yet again, and he wants to force her to marry him, but this time, he's hired what Nintendo is calling "evil wedding planners" to make sure that the marriage will actually happen. Nintendo also revealed that we'll get Amiibo of the game's main character's dressed up for the wedding, and they will unlock specific outfits in the game and will have some type of assist function, but they didn't reveal the specifics.
