Dave Bautista Didn’t Understand The Jokes For Guardians of The Galaxy 2 At First

There's been a lot of positive buzz around Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Reviews have been good and the film has done a pretty good job at the box office during its international opening weekend. However, while reception towards the sequel to James Gunn's first cosmic superhero movie has been mostly positive, Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista wasn't entirely into the film's script at first.

Speaking with CBR, the Hollywood actor and WWE wrestler revealed how he was originally unhappy with the way Vol. 2 was written and how he didn't find any of the jokes Drax made funny.

"I was excited about the script [but] when I first read the script, I wasn't crazy about my part. It went a different direction than what I thought they were going to go with Drax. That's just because I was expecting one thing and got another. So I was a little bit thrown off at first. Also, what I usually do when I get a script is I read my dialogue first, I just didn't really get the jokes. I just didn't think Drax was that significant in the film, and I don't find myself funny at all. So I remember reading, and I'm just sitting there not laughing. Like, wow, it was disappointing because I thought Drax was going to be so much more."

"When we sat down for the table read, is when it clicked. It clicked in my head. For one, I could hear everybody doing their own parts, and it was just so funny and deep, and some of it sad. But also, when I would say my lines and people would laugh, it would kind of start to make sense."

While it may come as a shock to fans that even some of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's jokes would fly over Bautista's head, it's pretty understandable that the actor would react that way. Sometimes scripts read differently when they're actually performed – lines can be given more depth with the inflection of an actor's voice, or a gesture of the hand or face. So far Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's script is working, because everyone seems to be loving the film.

The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is scheduled to hit stateside cinemas this Friday, May 5, 2017.
