Black Panther Set For Record-Breaking $218 Million Opening Weekend

Marvel's Black Panther is out to win.

Earning an estimated $192 million during its three-day debut in the US, Black Panther is now tracking for a $218 million four-day haul for the holidays. Adding in the $169 million that the film's earned from the international box office and the global tally for Black Panther adds up to $361 million.

That's certainly a whole lot for a superhero film.

According to The Guardian, Black Panther is now the fifth film with the biggest opening weekend, trailing behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic World and The Avengers. Black Panther has also won the highest-ever February debut, beating Deadpool's $152 million opening.

Of course, Black Panther's commercial success isn't quite a surprise. The film's been smashing records even before its domestic release, beating every other superhero movie's advanced ticket sales, including that of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Black Panther is certainly changing the shape of the comic book movie industry. There's been a lot of hype over the film. Black Panther isn't just Marvel's first standalone movie for T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), it's also Marvel's very first predominantly black superhero movie.

Black Panther is currently screening in cinemas.
