Matt Reeves' The Batman is expected to be set in the early years of Bruce Wayne's career as a vigilante. Though the film will feature parts of the Dark Knight's origin stories, The Batman isn't actually an origin movie.
"I wanted to do not an origin tale, but a tale that would still acknowledge his origins in that formed who he is," Reeves told Nerdist. "Like this guy, he's majorly struggling, and this is how he's trying to rise above that struggle. But that doesn't mean that he even fully understands, you know."
The director says it's more of the idea of the "shadow self" and what drives the person. How much of it he could incorporate it within himself as well as how much he's doing that he isn't aware of.
"There's something in there that feels very psychological, very emotional," Reeves added. "And it felt like there was a way of exploring that along with the corruption in this place, Gotham. That feels very current. I think it always does."
Reeves thinks "there's almost no time when you can't do a story about corruption." However, he says it seems "incredibly resonant" today and for him, "maybe more so than maybe at other time."
The movie will basically explore parts of Batman's past and show the struggles and adventures he had to become Dark Knight in the first place, but just like what Reeves has stated, it won't be the primary focus of the film.
The Batman is set for release on June 25, 2021.
