Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman is shaping up to be a pretty interesting blend of everything we know and love about DC's Dark Knight. Adding characters like Catwoman, Penguin, and The Riddler already has people talking, while the noir story will (hopefully) keep things gritty and grounded. However, filming of the movie was recently delayed due to COVID-19 and though it will likely make its June 2021 release date, fans are wondering if the film itself will change due to the current epidemic.
Speaking with Deadline, Reeves gave a fairly interesting answer about possible COVID-19 changes, saying that the "tone" of things might be explored now that he's gone back and seen some of the footage. It's apparently one of those "happy accidents" that you don't notice while shooting but is clearly visible when looking back, which Reeves might want to explore now that he's seen it.
"It feels like there might be an opportunity to explore some of that unexpected tone that we found. With these movies, you never have enough prep time, because they're so complex and so enormous in so many ways. It also gives me a moment to think about the larger sequences that have yet to come up and how I want to realize those."
There's definitely nothing wrong with improving on your product, especially when you discover something that can be expanded upon. We already trusted Matt Reeves with the project after his excellent Planet of the Apes trilogy so here's hoping that he does DC's golden boy justice. Considering the upward swing the DCEU has been in, there's definitely some faith that this will turn out well.
Fans will be able to watch The Batman on June 25, 2021, if COVID-19 subsides by then.
