Avatar: The Last Airbender is the New Star Wars in Latest Honest Trailer

Avatar: The Last Airbender has always been highly regarded online, but its popularity really boomed when the series started streaming on Netflix. Just in, Scree Junkies has released their Honest Trailer take for the series, and you could say it has a lot of repeating elements from pop-culture giant Star Wars.

Check it out:

First they brought you slime, then they grossed you out, now Nickelodeon brings you their crowing achievement: the best appropriation of Asian culture since Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai—Avatar: The Last Airbender

Even without the Honest Trailer, a lot of people have been comparing Avatar to Star Wars. The overall theme of the Hero’s Journey is prevalent for both franchises, and the episode where Aang rejects the Avatar State to save his friends was an obvious nod to Empire Strikes Back. A lot of people also forget that the voice behind Firelord Ozai is none other than Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.

Also, this was more of Star Wars following Avatar, but broody teenage hero seeking redemption was Zuko before it was Kylo Ren. You could even argue that Zuko’s arc is way more well written as compared to poor Ben Solo.

Besides that, the trailer has a lot of other things to poke fun at, like a modern take on The Ember Island Players. I never realized Aang fainted so much until Screen Junkies pointed it out.

For now, catch Avatar: The Last Airbender now available on Netflix.
