There's a lot going on in the Star Wars universe lately - and we're not talking about rebels fighting the wrath of the Galactic Empire or the First Order. With a huge line-up of TV shows, video games, and a number of movie projects in the pipeline, the faraway galaxy has never been busier.

Upcoming shows include The Mandalorian Season 3, The Bad Batch Season 2, Ahsoka, Andor, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, while new shows such as Star Wars: Visions and shorts like LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales have already landed on Disney+. But what about the films? Well, you'll be pleased to know that there are at least three separate projects in the works.

There's a movie being directed by Taika Waititi, one by Marvel President Kevin Feige, and a third by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins titled Rogue Squadron - although none of them will be related to each other, so don't go expecting a brand-new trilogy anytime soon (although there are rumors of a new trilogy in the works - but best take it with a pinch of Crait salt until we get something concrete).

For now, here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Rogue Squadron movie...

On November 8, it was announced that the film will be delayed due to director Patty Jenkins' schedule, and won't be released in December 2023 as originally scheduled.

Rogue Squadron trailer

While there's no actual trailer that includes movie footage, there is a teaser that was released earlier this year, in which director Patty Jenkins talks about her love for fighter jets and for Star Wars movies, and how she has managed to combine both of these passions into creating an exciting new story.

Rogue Squadron cast

No official cast list has been released for the movie yet, but many fans are speculating about which existing Star Wars characters might feature in the movie. One name that keeps popping up is Hera Syndulla from Star Wars: Rebels, who was due to appear in Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic, a now-canceled TV series. Hera is a starfighter and was part of the movement that started the Rebel Alliance.

She went on to become a top military leader after Rebels, which takes place a few years before A New Hope, and her name can even be heard over a speaker system in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. So if any well-known character is going to pop up in a film of this nature, we be our galactic credits it's everyone's favorite Twi'lek (and let's hope her astromech droid Chopper also tags along for the ride).

Rogue Squadron plot

Plot details are also yet to be revealed, but given the title of the movie, we can quite easily work out what the loose premise will be. The title Rogue Squadron, or Squadrons, has been used a lot in Star Wars canon and is the name of a number of video games. It references starfighter squadrons that fought during the time of the original Star Wars trilogy, with each squadron usually having different names.

There have also been a number of graphic novels that have used the title (with variations), so it's possible that Patty Jenkins will be taking a page out of some of these books - or perhaps the film will be an entirely new story altogether. Either way, we're certain it will orbit the original trilogy just like Rogue One does, whether it's sometime before or during the four years the three movies span.
