X-Men’s Simon Kinberg Weighs in on R-Rated Films

R-rated films have given a new avenue for superhero films. After Deadpool's success with humor and violence, and Logan's own direction of grit and substance, R-rated films don't seem as untouchable when it comes to high-grossing films.

Marvel seems to be interested in taking this route, when you consider the new Spawn update. But will it be the same for the X-Men franchise? X-Men: Supernova producer Simon Kinberg, together with Logan co-producer Hutch Parker, shared with Slash Film their thoughts on where the industry is as far as R-rated films are concerned.

"I think that each movie, we figure out what the story is, then we figure out the requirements of the story, and if the requirements of the story are R-rated, it's R-rated. We don't go into movies saying, this one's gonna be R-rated, this one's gonna be PG-13, we don't make those decisions before we make the decisions of the story."

While this seems like a safe answer, he did touch on the fact that, going with instinct alone, he can see both the Deadpool universe (including its sequel) as well as X-Force crossing into the R-rated territory.

Parker did acknowledge Deadpool for being able to open the doors to R-rated films, and removing the stigma that these kinds of movies don't sell tickets well.

I appreciate their approach of making the R-rating suited to the voice and the universe of the superheroes. This shows that story is still at the center of every decision, something that Marvel has proven to be the way towards creating a good movie time and again.

Logan is already out in theaters, while X-Men: Supernova has yet to finalize who will be its director.
