Will John Williams Score Star Wars: Episode VIII? Here’s What He Has To Say

At some time in the near future, Star Wars: Episode VIII will be going into post-production. It begs the question as to who will be chosen to score the next installment of the beloved space opera series. Of course, legendary composer John Williams will be first in mind among fans because of his history with Star Wars. Even though there are rumors that the Academy Award-winning composer is about to retire, he's still clearly the fan-favorite choice for making the score of Episode VIII.

During a recent event while conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, a member of the John Williams Fan Network forum (h/t Making Star Wars) recalled what the 84-year-old composer had to say about the possibility of scoring for the saga again.

He said:

When he took the stage, and before he started conducting the Scherzo, he said "I told the producers I wasn't sure if I wanted to do the next one, but told them I didn't want anyone else doing it either." It was certainly meant as a joke, and got a great laugh.

While it seemed like Williams was joking in his statement, it also appears like he's still thinking about returning to Star Wars. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be scored by Alexandre Desplat, and while it's the first Star Wars film to be scored by another composer other than John Williams, fans are still hoping for Williams to return to the saga.

I have to say that a Star Wars movie wouldn't be the same without the music of John Williams. However, it can't be denied that he is aging already, and I think it's about time that he rest. In any case, I think Disney will be able to find a good replacement for Williams. Maybe they could even have the two composers collaborate and slowly integrate the new composer's music into the saga without removing Williams altogether.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017, while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be out this year, December 16.
